Ammo troops are the grunts of the Air Force, bottom of the barrel right above security forces and right below Armament. I'm Armament, so I can't really say much. Just like to take my chance to rag on my rivals! Ammo is the greatest job in the Air Force. My best years were working on munitions, and I have done it all.
Yet, with out the ammo, the planes would be flying around a desert with nothing (no one even mentions kamikaze...), and the marines that called in the Arial support would be screwed. They may be grunts, but id say pretty important grunts.

After graduation the women pilots fanned out to military bases around the country. Their duties included ferrying personnel and supplies, delivering aircraft from one base to another, flight instruction, test flying all types of planes, and towing targets for air-to-air and anti-aircraft gunnery practice – with live ammunition. In some cases women flew aircraft that some men wouldn’t fly, like the B-26 Marauder and the B-29 Superfortress, to demonstrate that these planes weren’t as difficult to fly as believed. Overall, they logged 60 million miles in flight

Getting the WASP program itself off the ground was a hard-won accomplishment against gender bias. It took more than a decade due to initial resistance from people in the military. In 1930 the War Department considered the idea, but chief of the U.S. Army Air Corps had called the idea of women pilots “utterly unfeasible”, because women were too “high strung”. As America moved towards war, however, this view softened. In 1939 America’s most famous female pilot, Jacqueline Cochran, wrote to then-First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt to propose a women’s corps of pilots. By 1942 a women’s aviator program was finally launched.

As many as 25,000 women volunteered for spots but recruiting requirements were even more stringent than they were for men – women had to already have earned a pilot’s license. Ultimately, only 1,830 volunteers were accepted into the program, of which 1,074 graduated. Recruits made their way from around the country, paying their own way, to a municipal airport in Houston, Texas and later to Avenger Field near Sweetwater where they underwent the same rigorous training as their male counterparts.

Over 60 years ago when the U.S. faced a severe shortage of combat pilots to serve in World War II, a group of incredible women stepped up to help. The following excerpt is a historical account from the army air corp during world war 2. The Alaskan Air Force was activated on Elmendorf Field 15 January 1942 to manage the buildup of the Army Air Forces in Alaska. It was redesignated the Eleventh Air Force on 5 February 1942.

Following the Japanese bombing of Dutch Harbor in the eastern Aleutian Islands and the occupation of Attu and Kiska in the western Aleutians in early June 1942, the Eleventh Air Force launched an air offensive against the Japanese on the two islands.

Missions were flown initially from Cape Field on Umnak Island in the eastern Aleutians and later from fields built on Adak and Amchitka. Headquarters Eleventh Air Force was moved to Davis Field, Adak in early 1943. Attu was retaken in May 1943, and the Japanese withdrew their garrison from Kiska in late July.

The Aleutian Campaign ended with the reoccupation of Kiska on 15 August 1943. Primarily an air war, it was the only World War II campaign fought on North American soil. The Eleventh Air Force flew 297 missions and dropped 3,662.00 tons of bombs. One hundred and fourteen men were killed in action, another forty-two were reported missing in action and forty-six died as a result of accidents.

Thirty-five aircraft were lost to combat and another 150 to operational accidents. It was the highest American combat-to-operational loss ratio of the war. Weather was the prime culprit, especially the Winter Climate.

The Eleventh Air Force accounted for approximately 60 Japanese aircraft, one destroyer, one submarine and seven transport ships destroyed by air operations.

Following the occupation of Kiska, the Eleventh Air Force declined from peak strength of 16,526 in August 1943 to 6,849 by the end of the war. For the remainder of the war, it flew bombing and reconnaissance missions against Japanese military installations in the northern Kurile Islands from Attu and Shemya Islands. The first land based bombing mission of the World War II against the Japanese home islands was launched from Attu on 10 July 1943.

The Eleventh Air Force was redesignated the Alaskan Air Command on 18 December 1945, and its headquarters was moved from Adak to Elmendorf AFB on 1 October 1946 to better manage Alaska's emerging air defense system.

Alaska's air defenses were greatly expanded during 1945-1955 period. An extensive aircraft control and warning (AC&W) system was constructed along Alaska's coast and interior. The Alaskan segment of the DEW Line was built, and later the DEW Line was extended to the eastern Aleutian Islands.

By 1957, AAC had reached the height of its strength with over 200 fighter interceptors assigned to six squadrons. Early warning and fighter direction were provided by 18 aircraft control and warning and 12 DEW (defense early warning)Line sites tied together by the White Alice Communications System. Its assigned strength was 20,687. The forces were organized into two air divisions providing "Top Cover for America."

The late 1950s and the 1960s saw a major reduction in AAC's forces as Air Force air defense doctrine began changing, and emphasis shifted to a defense against a mixed threat of missile and bomber attacks. The number of fighter interceptor squadrons shrunk to one, the air divisions were inactivated, and the aircraft control and warning sites reduced to 13. The assigned strength dropped to 9,987 by 1969. The Aleutian DEW Line segment was dismantled. Emphasis shifted towards supporting other commands.

The manpower intensive, 1950s era aircraft control and warning system radars were replaced with minimum attended AN/FPS-117 minimally attended, long range radars. The system achieved its operational capability in October 1985. The outdated, semi-automated Alaskan NORAD Control Center was replaced with the fully automated Regional Operations Control Center.

Further improvements were made to the force structure with the arrival of F-15As in 1982, upgraded to "C" models during 1987-86. On 1 July 1986, the 962nd Airborne Warning and Control System Squadron was activated at Elmendorf AFB to operate two E-3 Sentry aircraft on rotational duty to Alaska. (The aircraft were later assigned to the squadron.) A second F-15C squadron was added the next year. The modern radar system, the F-15s and the E-3 resulted in a greater capability to protect the air sovereignty of North America. The number of Soviet aircraft intercepts increased dramatically from an average of ten a year during the first half of the 1980s to a record of 31 in 1987, after which the numbers began to decline dramatically following the breakup of the Soviet Union. Four Russian aircraft were intercepted in 1993.

One of the most singular events affecting AAC was the disestablishment of the Alaskan Command on 1 July 1975. The Commander, AAC assumed the additional responsibility of Commander, Joint Task Force-Alaska, a provisional joint command that could be activated in the event of an emergency, such as the Exxon Valdez oil spill in March 1989.

The Alaskan Command was reestablished on 7 July 1989, as a subordinate unified command under the U.S. Pacific Command in recognition of Alaska's strategic importance to the defense of the Pacific.

With the activation of the Alaskan Command, the next logical step was to place its air component (AAC) under the Pacific Air Forces. On 9 August 1990, the Alaskan Air Command was redesignated the Eleventh Air Force. Finally, in keeping with Air Force Chief of Staff guidance to retain the most illustrious units, the 343rd Wing, a veteran of the Aleutian Campaign, was inactivated in August 1993. The 354th Fighter Wing was activated in its place.

The mission of the Eleventh Air Force shifted during the early 1990s from defending Alaska against the Soviet Union bomber threat to committing its forces to worldwide deployment and providing training opportunities for others.

The Chinese film industry is about to collaborate with Hollywood in making the most expensive film in Chinese history. The tentative name of the project is “Flying Tiger Heroes” and is expected to have a budget of over US $100 million. The film is based on the events following the Pearl Harbor disaster when Chinese and American air men teamed up to face the Japanese Air Force in combat over the skies of China and Burma. Known around the world today as the legendary Flying Tigers, they were identifiable by their striking black shark like aircrafts roaring low on the horizons. The Flying Tigers were composed of the American Volunteer Group of the Chinese Air Force. Under General Claire Lee Chenault a retired U.S. Army Air Corps, this band of 300 volunteering air men created a combat record that no other aerial squadron in history has ever come anywhere close to.

Directed by Hong Kong based director John Woo of Mission Impossible 2 fame the film is expected to capture stunning scenes of aerial battle ever seen in Chinese cinema. This would be a tribute to the daring exploits and innovative war strategies of the Fei Hu which had achieved prominent victories for the Allied Forces in the wake of the World War II. Woo could also draw his materials from the classic 1942 John Wayne starrer “Flying Tigers”. The ninety-minute film with extensive interviews and film footage shot by the members of the Flying Tigers tells the story of the air men and other volunteer staff on mission ranging from nurses, doctors or even clerks who arrived in disguise from the US West Coast before training in the dense forests of Southeast Asia.
Deemed as national heroes in present day China, one of the astonishing episodes of the Flying Tiger history is how Chenault created a group of inexperienced fighters from the American army, navy and air force into seasoned airmen that fought incredible air battles over China and the jungles of Myanmar. Created under the secret order of President Franklin Roosevelt to help China defend her cities from relentless Japanese bombing, the Fei Hu secretly trained in the jungles of Southeast Asia, getting ready to face the Japanese Air Force over the skies of China and Rangoon. Roosevelt’s secret order and the status of the Flying Tiger pilots as “volunteers” was necessitated by the fact that the group was formed before the US had officially entered WWII and declared war on Japan. Not surprisingly, knowledge of the Flying Tigers’ exploits in China abroad was minimal until the US officially entered the war.

In 1991, the Flying Tigers had a reunion in Kunming to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their exploits. In addition to the pilots, the local Chinese translators and assistants that worked with them also attended this meeting. As most of the pilots didn't learn Chinese while based in Kunming, these translators played a key role in fostering better communication between the American pilots and their counterparts in the Chinese air force. This cooperation between these two groups was the key to the vast amount of success the Flying Tigers achieved.
Speaking in a signing ceremony of the film Woo said that the movie would emphasize the spirit of Yunnan province, a training site of the Flying Tigers as well as Chinese heroes from World War II. The joint collaboration film would also highlight the US-China friendship that was at the birth of the Flying
Tigers.

Superintendent is the Academy's commanding officer, and is responsible for cadet military training, academic, athletic, and character development programs.

The Commandant monitors the more than 4,400 cadets, in addition to the 300 members of support staff.

More than 500 courses relating to 32 academic subject areas are controlled by the Dean of Commandants.

The 10th Air Base Wing (10th ABW)is comprised of more than 2,100 military, civilian, and contract personnel. The 10th ABW activities include law enforcement, civil engineering, communications, logistics, military and civilian personnel operations, and a clinic and hospital round out the services at the US Air Force Academy.

The Academy is considered as an 'open' base, and each year, thousands of people visit the Academy. The Academy's Visitor Center has historical photos and educational information on display. An informative and educational film can be enjoyed by visitors in the comfortable theater. The Cadet Chapel is open to the public, and the massive sheets of glass that compose the construction of the chapel has been described as an architect wonder.

Visitors are also welcome to visit the Honor Court, Cadet Field House, Arnold Hall, Falcon Athletic Center, the Association of Graduates Building, and Falcon Stadium. Along the way, visitors can stop at several scenic overlooks that provide an unobstructed view of the spacious plains to the East, and the massive Rocky Mountains to the West.

The 306th Flying Training Group (FTG), located at the Academy, screens aviator candidates prior to entrance into the Undergraduate Flight Training program. The 306 FTG provides powered flight soaring and parachuting training to more than 2,500 cadets.

The Cadet dining facility, Mitchell Hall, is on of the largest dining facilities in the world, covering more than 1.7 acres. Three of the glass walls extend from the floor to the ceiling in this dining facility. Each year, more than 3 million meals are prepared and served, and 100,000 box lunches are prepared in support of Cadet Wing programs and activities.

Cadets march into Mitchell Hall, nine abreast. One waiter is in attendance to serve 10 tables. When the cadets take their seats, the meal is served family-style, and is finish the meal in 20 minutes. The entire operation is accomplished by more than 200 civil service employees.

Besides military leadership training and education, cadets are required to maintain a level of physical fitness. Daily fitness routines are incorporated into their busy schedules. Male cadets also have opportunities to be involved with the many sports offered at the Academy. Sports for men include, baseball, basketball, boxing, fencing, golf, gymnastics, swimming, tennis, rifle, soccer, field and track, water polo, wrestling, and football. Sports activities for women include, basketball, cross country, gymnastics, fencing, rifle, soccer, swimming, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

Cadets have very little free time. Their day begins at 5:30 AM, and go to bed at 10:30 PM. Every evening, personal hygiene and relaxation times are provided. Studying, writing letters to families, and relaxing time is provided prior to the final taps of the day.

Adjustment problems can be expected. Professionally trained officers and upper class cadets are available to help to the new cadet conform to Academy expectations. But, the high educational, physical, and personal demands of cadet life is not for everyone.

Having lived and worked on the US Air Force Academy for more than 16 years, I can tell you that the Academy offers uncompromisable educational and lifestyle opportunities for future military leaders. Although many tears are shed as cadets say 'good-bye' to their families, the benefits awaiting them are rewarding. The cadet life requires many adjustments and commitments, and some people are unable to tolerate the demands. So, perhaps a visit to the Academy could be in your best interest before signing on that dotted line.

Traveling With Protection On That Special Vacation

Expecting some things is not something to look forward to but at least, the troubles will lessen if ever you get caught in such awful circumstances. Its sense is discovering the type of insurance that will provide you the most security for your trip. A result from a survey on base travel offices shows that some people from the US military assigned in Europe rarely finds the need of securing themselves with travel insurance. Travel insurance is only known to a few people, revealed by a representative. Offering it to people is necessary. About three people inquired about insurance and I've been working here for over a year and a half now.

The things to consider before thinking of travel insurance are what you own like health, automobile and life insurances. Do your present policies cover sickness or accidents when you are on the road, especially out of the country? If not, considering one more insurance is worth it.

A few resorts in Europe include accident insurance when you buy a vacation package. Inquire with your travelling agency or tour agent if reserving that ski week means you get automatic insurance or if it is separately purchased. Delve into its coverage if it is part of the package.

Don't overlook travel protection that you have if you are a member of an automobile club. Be knowledgeable with all the labors car organizations recommend as an added aid to breakdowns. When you get involved in a car accident and your car can no longer be used, they sometimes include certain things like insurance for luggage and a car to get back home.

Never rely on full coverage on your car if your insurance policy for just a short period when you are having that vacation drive. For people in the military community, some auto insurance firms make them wait several weeks before having the effect of the insurance since this is what most did.

Provided are baggage, sickness and accident, plane travel accident and cancelled trip insurance by some insurances specific for travel. When you picked out the type of insurance you wanted, never forget to read the policy. Ask for clarification when you don't understand everything. A concrete example is the exclusion of the cost of medicine on medical insurance. Americans in the United States will not be covered by travel medical insurance and it will be voided as the travel medical policy that states that it is only effective when a traveler is out of his country.

Purchasing insurance with a policy that covers what is unnecessary to you and doesn't have coverage on your needs is a waste of money. The amount of coverage and the time that your policy is valid are the two factors that dictate your insurance policy cost. Let's say that you will be paying $7 a month and about $32 for six months to have belongings insured for the minimum for $1000 for at least eight days. The total amount of having your luggage covered is $5000 where $135 is for eight days and $160 is good for six months.

Suitcase, accidents, illness, plane travel and cancellation insurance in separated policies are offered by the Air Force on base travel agents for Air Force on base and many varieties of a package trip insurance. There are some travel agencies which are comparable in terms of total coverage and price of policy but can vary due to the time periods. For example, luggage can be insured $1,000 for eight days at $6, or $5,500 for eight days for $33.

Only in post departure or pre and post departure is the only time when your trip cancellation and emergency medical evacuation combined family plans will be valid. Combined family coverage's worth is $35 for every $1,000 for after leaving and $50 before and after leaving, with extra fee of $3.50 and $5 correspondingly for every added $100 of coverage of more than $2,000. The policy on cancellation will not cover unexpected default of a tour operator, airline or cruise line that will result in total loss of services.
